Additional Notes
Small village (population ~183) incorporated in 1907; no official village website could be located. IMPORTANT DISAMBIGUATION: this is the Village of Williamson in Madison County -- it is NOT related to, and should not be confused with, Williamson County, Illinois (seat: Marion, IL, in far southern Illinois), which surfaced repeatedly in searches for similarly-named permit offices; that county's Building & Zoning materials were confirmed (via direct fetch of williamsoncountyil.gov) to belong to the unrelated county and were excluded. Madison County's own Building & Zoning Department (madisoncountyil.gov, phone 618-296-6200) explicitly covers only unincorporated areas of Madison County, and since Williamson is an incorporated village it likely falls outside that department's jurisdiction. Unverified third-party listings (Yelp) give a village hall address of 1201 Williamson Ave, Staunton, IL 62088 and phone (618) 637-2549, but neither could be confirmed on an official government domain, so both are omitted from the confirmed fields.
What You Need Before Applying for a Permit
Most building departments ask for the same core package before they'll issue a permit: a completed application naming the property owner and contractor, the contractor's state license number and proof of insurance (general liability, and workers' comp if employees are on the job), a notice of commencement or equivalent recorded filing for larger jobs where the state requires one, and scaled plans or a site plan for anything beyond minor repairs. Roofing, fence, pool, and solar permits typically have their own simplified checklists — Village of Williamson's department (above) can confirm exactly what applies to your project.
Why this matters for insurance: permit history is one of the first things an underwriter or adjuster checks. Unpermitted work — a finished basement, an added bedroom, a rebuilt roof — can complicate a claim or even void coverage for that portion of the loss, and it routinely surfaces during a home inspection. Pulling the right permit up front, and keeping the closed-permit record on file, protects both the property's value and its insurability at resale.
