Additional Notes
Per Crawford County's official Land Conservation & Zoning 'Clerks/UDC' reference sheet, a footnote states: 'Clayton Township - Bill Olson, Town Chairman, issues building permits, 608-475-4903.' The same sheet lists Town Clerk Charity Smith, 608-606-0459, townofclayton.clerk@gmail.com, 14815 State Hwy 131, Gays Mills WI 54631 (matching the email on the town's own website), and marks the town's UDC inspector as Bradley Smrcina of Smrcina Inspections LLC. The county sheet marks this town's zoning status 'N' (not comprehensively county-zoned), consistent with the town's own notice that a township building permit is separate from any county zoning permit. Town Hall/Shop is on US Hwy 61 just south of Soldiers Grove, open by appointment only; official site is claytontownshipcrawfordcowi.gov. A differently-named site, townclayton.com, also appeared in search results but failed to resolve (DNS error) during this research and was not used. Distinct from Village of Clayton (Polk County), Town of Clayton (Polk County), and Town of Clayton (Winnebago County) — do not cross-contaminate.
What You Need Before Applying for a Permit
Most building departments ask for the same core package before they'll issue a permit: a completed application naming the property owner and contractor, the contractor's state license number and proof of insurance (general liability, and workers' comp if employees are on the job), a notice of commencement or equivalent recorded filing for larger jobs where the state requires one, and scaled plans or a site plan for anything beyond minor repairs. Roofing, fence, pool, and solar permits typically have their own simplified checklists — Town of Clayton's department (above) can confirm exactly what applies to your project.
Why this matters for insurance: permit history is one of the first things an underwriter or adjuster checks. Unpermitted work — a finished basement, an added bedroom, a rebuilt roof — can complicate a claim or even void coverage for that portion of the loss, and it routinely surfaces during a home inspection. Pulling the right permit up front, and keeping the closed-permit record on file, protects both the property's value and its insurability at resale.
